Online ordering and delivery systems for grocery stores and food businesses

Grocery delivery is one of the most operationally demanding kinds of e-commerce: thousands of products, prices that change weekly, items sold by weight, fresh products with short shelf life and customers who expect delivery within hours. Delivery platforms such as Wolt already operate grocery delivery in Baku. A grocery chain or food producer building its own channel has to compete on range, price, reliability and convenience — which is mostly about operations, not design.

In short

In short

  1. 01

The catalog must be driven by real stock and prices, updated frequently from the store or warehouse system.

  2. 02

Items sold by weight need special handling: estimated prices at order, final price after weighing.

  3. 03

Substitution rules — what to do when an item is missing — should be agreed with the customer at checkout.

  4. 04

Delivery slots must reflect real courier capacity, or promises will be broken on busy days.

  5. 05

Repeat orders and saved lists make regular customers' lives easier and drive most of the revenue.

Overview

The customer side

  • Fast search tolerant of spelling variants in Azerbaijani and Russian.
  • Categories that match how people shop, plus "previously bought" and saved lists.
  • Weight-based items with a clear note that the final price may differ slightly after weighing.
  • Substitutions: allow, choose a preferred replacement, or call first.
  • Delivery slots with realistic windows, and express delivery where operations allow it.
  • Payment: card online, card or cash on delivery. See cash on delivery in Azerbaijan.
  • Order tracking with notifications.

Many customers order repeatedly from a phone, so a fast mobile website or an app matters. See mobile app development.

The operations side

  • Order picking: a picker app that lists items by store aisle, supports weighing, scanning and substitutions, and updates the final order total.
  • Slot capacity: the number of orders per slot and zone based on pickers and couriers available.
  • Courier app: route, order details, customer contact, payment on delivery, proof of delivery.
  • Stock sync with the store or warehouse system, so out-of-stock items are hidden quickly. See inventory sync.
  • Customer service: missing items, refunds and complaints handled in the same system.

Own channel or platforms

Platforms bring demand and handle delivery, at a commission. Your own channel gives control over range, prices, customer data and experience, but requires delivery operations. Many businesses use both: platforms for express delivery of a limited range, their own channel for planned, larger baskets and loyal customers.

Food producers

Bakeries, dairies, meat producers and similar businesses selling directly to consumers or to shops need a slightly different setup: pre-orders with delivery days, subscriptions for regular products, and B2B ordering for shops and restaurants with their own prices and credit terms. See B2B e-commerce portals.

Delivery zones and costs

Delivery zones by district, minimum order values, delivery fees and free delivery thresholds should be clear before checkout. Address entry must handle the reality of addresses in Baku — landmarks, entrances, floors — with a map pin to help couriers. More in delivery for online stores in Azerbaijan.

What to measure

  • Orders per customer per month and repeat rate.
  • Items missing at picking and substitution acceptance.
  • On-time delivery by slot and zone.
  • Average basket size and delivery cost per order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can we launch online grocery with only part of our range?

Yes, and it is often wise: start with products whose stock data is reliable and whose handling is simple, and expand as operations mature.

How do we price items sold by weight?

Show a price per kilogram and an estimated price for a typical weight, reserve a slightly higher amount if paid by card, and charge the final amount after weighing.

Should we build our own courier team?

It depends on volume and zone coverage. Some businesses start with third-party couriers and build their own team once volume is steady.
