Accepting payments in Telegram bots

Telegram bots can sell: food orders, event tickets, consultations, subscriptions to content, physical products. How the payment happens depends on what is sold and which payment providers are available to your business. This guide explains the three main approaches. Telegram's rules and provider availability change, so check the current documentation before building.

In short

In short

  1. 01

For physical goods and services, Telegram's Bot Payments API works with third-party payment providers connected to the bot.

  2. 02

For digital goods and services consumed inside Telegram, Telegram requires payment in Telegram Stars.

  3. 03

A bot can also send customers to your own payment page with your local provider — often the practical option for businesses in Azerbaijan.

  4. 04

Whatever the route, the order is confirmed only after a verified payment notification.

  5. 05

Refunds, receipts and reconciliation must be handled outside the chat as well.

Guide

Route 1: Bot Payments API with a provider

Telegram's payment interface lets a bot send an invoice; the user pays within Telegram through a connected payment provider. Telegram lists supported providers, and each provider has its own country and currency coverage. For a business in Azerbaijan, the question is whether any listed provider can onboard your company and settle to your account. If one can, this route offers a smooth in-chat experience.

Route 2: Telegram Stars for digital goods

For digital goods and services — access to content, features inside a bot or Mini App — Telegram requires the use of its in-app currency, Telegram Stars, in line with app store rules. Users buy Stars through Telegram, and developers receive them for their sales, with conversion options set by Telegram. This fits digital products sold to a broad audience; it is not designed for physical goods or offline services.

Route 3: your own payment page

The bot sends a link to a payment page on your website, operated by your bank or local payment provider. After payment, your server receives the provider's notification and the bot confirms the order in the chat. This works with any provider you already use, supports local cards and settles in manats. See accepting online payments in Azerbaijan and payment gateway integration.

The trade-off is a step outside Telegram; a fast, mobile-friendly payment page keeps it small.

Mini Apps

Telegram Mini Apps — web interfaces opened inside Telegram — are useful for catalogs and checkout. Payment rules still depend on what is sold: digital goods follow the Stars rules, physical goods can use providers or an external payment page.

Confirming payments

Never mark an order as paid because the user tapped a button or returned to the chat. The order is confirmed after the provider or Telegram sends a verified payment notification to your server. The bot then sends confirmation, and the order moves to your CRM or order system.

Receipts, refunds and accounting

  • Receipts and invoices according to the rules that apply to your business.
  • Refunds through the provider, with the bot informing the customer.
  • Reconciliation of payments with orders.
  • Order data exported to accounting.

Designing the flow

  1. The user chooses products or a service in the bot or Mini App.
  2. The bot shows a summary: items, delivery, total.
  3. The user chooses a payment option.
  4. Payment happens through the chosen route.
  5. The server confirms payment; the bot sends confirmation and next steps.
  6. Status updates follow in the chat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a bot accept local Azerbaijani cards?

Through your own payment page with a local provider, yes. Through Telegram's built-in payments, it depends on the providers available to your business.

Can we sell subscriptions through a bot?

Yes. For digital subscriptions inside Telegram, Stars rules apply; for services delivered outside Telegram, recurring payments depend on your payment provider's support for saved cards.

Is it safe to pay in a bot?

When payment happens on the provider's or Telegram's secure interface, card details are not shared with the bot. Users should be told clearly who processes the payment.
