Digital landscape of Azerbaijan in 2026: the numbers that matter for business

Planning a website, an app or an advertising budget in Azerbaijan starts with a few questions: how many people are online, what devices they use, where they search and which social platforms reach them. This guide collects the most recent published figures from two widely cited sources — DataReportal's Digital 2026 report and StatCounter — and explains what each means in practice. Every number is attributed and dated; figures change, so check the sources before relying on them for large decisions.

Internet and connectivity

DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for Azerbaijan gives these headline figures for October 2025:

IndicatorValue
Population10.4 million
Internet users9.27 million (89.0% of population)
Cellular mobile connections12.3 million (118% of population)
Social media user identities7.61 million (73.1% of population)

The same report cites median download speeds of 76.61 Mbps on mobile and 83.95 Mbps on fixed connections (August 2025, based on Ookla data).

What it means: the audience is largely online, and connection speeds are reasonable in cities. That does not remove the need for fast websites — speed varies by region and network, and slow pages still lose visitors — but heavy content is not automatically excluded. Mobile connections exceeding the population reflect people with more than one SIM card, which is common.

Search engines

StatCounter's search engine market share for Azerbaijan in August 2026:

Search engineShare
Google97.39%
Yandex1.84%
Bing0.57%
Othersunder 0.2% combined

What it means: for organic search and search advertising, Google is effectively the whole market. Yandex still appears in some businesses' plans out of habit or because of a Russian-speaking audience, but its share is small; see Yandex in Azerbaijan. Bing's share is small in classic search, but its index feeds some AI search products, which is a separate reason to be visible there; see AI search visibility.

Devices

StatCounter's platform share of web traffic in Azerbaijan for August 2026 was 51.53% mobile, 48.12% desktop and 0.36% tablet.

What it means: the often-repeated claim that "almost all traffic in Azerbaijan is mobile" is not supported by this data at the level of the whole web. The split differs strongly by audience: consumer services and Instagram-driven traffic lean heavily mobile, while B2B, government services and office users lean desktop. Your own analytics is the only reliable guide for your site — and both experiences must work well.

Social media reach

DataReportal reports advertising reach — how many people a platform's ad tools say can be reached — for late 2025:

PlatformEstimated ad reachShare of population
Instagram4.25 million40.8%
Facebook1.65 million15.8%
LinkedIn1.20 million members11.5%
Messenger438 thousand4.2%
X266 thousand2.6%

What it means: Instagram is the dominant Meta platform for reaching consumers in Azerbaijan; Facebook's reach is much smaller than in many other countries, although it still matters for some audiences and as an ad placement. LinkedIn's membership makes it a real channel for B2B and hiring. Advertising reach figures are not the same as active users and can change when platforms change their methodology; other analytics providers publish different estimates, so compare like with like.

Messengers

Public statistics on messenger use in Azerbaijan are less consistent than for social networks. In practice, WhatsApp is the default channel through which many customers contact businesses, and Telegram is widely used for channels, bots and communities. Planning should assume that customers will want to write, not only call or fill in forms. See messengers for business in Azerbaijan.

E-commerce and platforms

The local digital economy includes several large platforms that shape customer habits: Birmarket (formerly Umico) within the Bir ecosystem that also includes Birbank; the classifieds portals tap.az, turbo.az, bina.az and boss.az operated by Digital Classifieds; and delivery services such as Wolt in Baku. Customers are used to buying online, paying by card and receiving delivery. See marketplaces and classifieds in Azerbaijan.

How to use these numbers

  • For budgeting, use platform reach to estimate audience size, then your own test campaigns to estimate cost and conversion.
  • For website planning, use your own analytics for devices and languages; national averages hide large differences between audiences.
  • For reporting, cite the source and date of every market figure, and do not mix sources in one comparison.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why do different sources give different social media numbers?

They measure different things — advertising reach, monthly active users, survey responses — with different methods. DataReportal's reach figures come from platforms' own ad tools; other providers use panels or surveys.

Is mobile more important than desktop in Azerbaijan?

Nationally the split is close to even. For consumer businesses mobile usually dominates; for B2B, desktop often does. Check your own analytics.

How often are these figures updated?

DataReportal publishes an annual report with periodic updates; StatCounter updates monthly. Check the current figures before making decisions based on them.
