SERP (search engine results page)

A SERP — search engine results page — is the page a search engine shows in response to a query. Modern SERPs contain much more than ten blue links: ads, maps with local businesses, AI-generated overviews, featured snippets, images, videos, "people also ask" questions, product listings and more.

Explained

Common elements on Google

  • Ads at the top and bottom, labelled as sponsored.
  • Organic results — the classic links, with titles and descriptions.
  • Local pack — a map with nearby businesses for local queries. See local SEO in Baku.
  • AI Overviews — generated summaries with source links, for some queries. See AI search visibility.
  • Featured snippets — a highlighted answer from one page.
  • People also ask, videos, images, shopping results, knowledge panels.

Why the layout matters

The same position means different things on different SERPs. Ranking first organically below four ads, a map and an AI overview brings fewer clicks than ranking first on a plain results page. Looking at the actual SERP for your key queries shows:

  • which formats Google considers relevant — articles, products, local businesses;
  • whether ads or maps dominate;
  • which competitors and platforms appear.

SERPs vary

Results differ by location, language, device and personalisation. Queries in Azerbaijani, Russian and English about the same topic can show very different SERPs in Baku.
