Progressive web app (PWA)

A progressive web app (PWA) is a web application that uses modern browser features to behave like an installed app: it can be added to the home screen, open without browser controls, load fast on repeat visits, work with a poor connection and, on supported platforms, send notifications.

Explained

What makes a website a PWA

  • HTTPS.
  • A web app manifest describing the name, icons and appearance.
  • A service worker — a script that caches resources, serves content offline and handles push messages.
  • Responsive, app-like design.

Capabilities and limits

  • Installable on Android and desktop browsers; on iOS through "Add to Home Screen".
  • Push notifications on Android and, since iOS 16.4, for web apps added to the home screen on iPhones.
  • Offline behaviour designed per screen.
  • Access to many device features, but fewer than native apps; some hardware and background capabilities remain app-only.
  • No app store approval required; updates are immediate.

When it fits

Ordering, booking, portals, internal tools and MVPs, where reaching all devices with one codebase matters more than deep device integration. See progressive web apps and PWA vs native app.
